讲座内容:

Current regulations for the assessment of the toxicological risks of chemicals released into the environment around the globe rely on extensive live-animal testing using a few standard model species. In addition to the huge costs and ethical objections regarding animal testing, these approaches are often not adequately protective of organisms of concern, such as native species of fishes. In my research group, we use a number of experimental and computational models to bridge this gap. In this presentation, I will focus on two examples: (1) an in vitromodel to predict the sensitivity of early-life stages of European eels to dioxin-like chemicals, and (2) a computational model to extrapolate the bioaccumulation potential of chemicals across different fish species. Successful implementation of these approaches in chemical risk assessment will represent a great step towards more sustainable, efficient, and unbiased assessments of the safety of the large number of chemicals in use today and in the future.
